Anyone who promises to demystify, “The experience of getting close to the unsayable and feeling it, and how we are brought to that place beyond words by words themselves,” deserves a hearing, wouldn’t you say?
Well, that is precisely what Zapruder promises in his Introduction, so who am I to turn such an invitation down? I did not and I’m glad I didn’t.
This book is a tour de force that begins at Poetry 101 and teaches, shares, implores, and inspires all the way through 899.
Throughout this well-written and well-paced book, Zapruder continues to make the case for the true importance (especially in these uncertain and, quite frankly, frightening times) of Poetry. While we are continuously bombarded by language—both well- and mis-used—from all directions, to the point, literally, where you have to shut off your mobile or laptop just to carve out some space/time to think, he stresses that poetry can (and will, if you allow it) serve as the antidote by not only help create that spiritual breathing space, but also by filling it with beauty and truth.
Zapruder has, over many years as a poet himself, given all this some serious thought, and it shows: his love and care for poetry as a spiritual medium shines through on virtually every page.
If you read one book about the mission and beauty of poetry, this would be the one I’d recommend.
